Xen (????? Edition)
Arca's star is on the rise, thanks to his futurist productions for FKA twigs, Kanye and Björk. His debut album confirms that he's one of the most original voices in electronic music. His beats bump and flex with elastic abandon, drawing inspiration from techno, hip-hop, grime and dancehall while they bob woozily around the rhythmic grid. Distortion and dissonance play key roles; "Sisters" feels like it's ripping apart at the seams. Elsewhere, he serves up ominous string pizzicatos and pays homage to Harold Budd's watery pianos. It's a white-knuckled ride from extreme to extreme.
