Hold Me Down
Label: Astralwerks (ASW)
“Sick of all the people talking / sick of being poised” -- from the opening moments of Halsey’s foreboding debut, the Astralwerks prodigy seems wary of pop fame, no matter that she’s just barely arrived on the scene. From the spaghetti western sleaze of “Strange Love” to the glistening chorus of breakout single “New Americana,” these atmospheric set pieces practically quiver with inner turmoil, while guest producers Lido and Son Lux up the electro-grime ante. And don’t overlook her eye for poetic detail, like when she sells her soul to a three-piece or gripes about survival of the richest.
