Vulnicura Strings (The Acoustic Version - Strings, Voice and Viola Organista Only)
Label: Embassy of Music
As much a tinkerer as a trailblazer, Bjork has always been open to revision. Vulnicura Strings strips her 2015 breakup album down to wheeling string arrangements, excising her young producers' brooding trip-hop thrum. It can make her swooping melodies can sound more repetitive, but on creeping epics like "Black Lake," the lack of beats frees a sea of strings that swell and drain as emotionally as Bjork's voice. The traditional palette means no hi-tech synthesizers or gamelestes, but fans of Bjork’s gearhead side do get a mechanical, keyboard-operated viola designed by Leonardo Da Vinci.
