Faith in the Future
Label: Partisan Records
Craig Finn's aging rockers and troubled scene kids continue to wash up on life's shores in these driving, wistful bar-rock songs. Trusty assemblies of shaggy drums and lachrymose piano serve to cushion Finn's tender, florid, mostly tuneless vocals. On tracks like "Roman Guitars," burbling horns provide the licks of color that would be guitarist Tad Kubler's job on a Hold Steady album, but it's the hushed, unadorned "Christine," an unrequited love song tenderly wrapped in barbed ironies, where Finn's voice and pen are sharpest.
