Days of Gold
Label: Rca Records Label Nashville
Having accumulated three country No. 1s and 11 more top 20s (not all included here) since 2006, but with 2017 singles falling short, this Florida beach-comber sums up his first charting decade –mostly “laaaaaid back,” as he put it Snoop-style in the 2014 chart-topper “Beachin’,” which also features reggae and Bobby McFerrin references. That’s only the sunniest of many summery songs here, combining the “wooooaaagh”s of “Free Fallin’”-guitared “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” with talked parts that hint at rapping. “Eight Second Ride” sneaks possible dirty words between its prairie-pomped hard prog riffs, “The One That Got Away” hooks like powerpop. And even the two new cuts aren’t bad – between its clave beat, whistle effects and sax solo, closer “Long As You’re In It” almost feels jazzy.
