1. Andante molto
Label: Deutsche Grammophon (DG)
The young Georgian violinist continues to show that, beyond fearsome technique, she has a flair for programming. So we get a Brahms warhorse -- the Violin Concerto in D Major -- but with a twist, since she plays the rarely heard, first-movement cadenza by Busoni. It's thrilling stuff, and the soloist's rapport with conductor Christian Thielemann is apparent. As a pairing, she offers three short "romances" for violin and piano by Brahms' great (unconsummated) love, Clara Schumann. If not as electric as the music by Brahms, they're more than enjoyable -- even sincerely touching.
