Modeselektor and Apparat would seem to have radically different agendas. The former are irrepressible party-starters who mix up techno, bass music and hip-hop; the latter uses IDM as a springboard for dreamy melancholia. On their second album together, they reconcile their approaches into a dramatic sound that combines tremendous might with heartbreaking intimacy. Apparat's vocals take cues from Thom Yorke and James Blake; the trio's intricate rhythms and immense bass suggest Burial in 3D Imax.
