It's fun watching people try to describe Shamir Bailey's voice, from "alien" and "androgynous" to "Nina Simone." All of these are off, especially the last -- Shamir lacks Simone's authority. But when this Vegas native keeps things fast and simple, he's a delight, as chintzy synth hooks and dry beats lead the electro-disco charge. "On the Regular" remains his sole swerve towards anything resembling hip-hop, so come prepared for omnipresent tinkling cowbell and colorful commentary like "Don't try me, I'm not a free sample." He's definitely one to watch.
