On their second album, Spandau Ballet added a muscular funk pulse to their gauzy fop-pop, improving on the New Romantic sound of their debut. "Chant No. 1" became a dance-floor hit in the U.S., but the single and album topped the charts in Britain, where "Instinction" also went Top 10. "Paint Me Down" brings punk disdain to slick dance pop, "Coffee Club" is a winner, and the slow final cuts find our boys working in a Bowie/Japan art school mode. The track "She Loved Like Diamond" (its ridiculous lyrics have to be heard to be believed) laid the foundation for Spandau's coming American breakthrough.
